I have always favored the color palettes of the Dutch Old Masters. The dark colors they used to create forms and shadows give their paintings a depth into which I am irresistibly drawn.
Although my subject matter is traditional, I have attempted to present it in an original way. Primarily focusing on the sky in the moments just prior to a storm, when the cloud formations are at their peak, affords me the opportunity to explore somber colors, contrast, and form simultaneously. |
The universality of this subject, while dramatic, is also calm and very approachable. There is a meditative quality to the skies. The almost monochromatic tones lack frivolity; however, with subtle rays of light shining through transparent areas, I hope to inspire awe rather than gloom. |
